Hockey For The Homeless

Friday March 6th Freedom 55 hosted the inaugural Hockey Helps The Homeless charity tournament with 10 participating teams. We raised $87,000.00 for two deserving local charities the David Busby Centre and the Redwood. As I am not a hockey player I participated as a team host and took care of  our own Freedom 55 team. Our two NHL pros were Dave Reid and Gilbert Dionne. ‎Thank you Dave and Gilbert for sharing your time and stories with us. Our team played well and some stylish goals were score.

At dinner I had the privilege of sitting with Jessica Peddle‎, executive director of the David busby Centre and she shared how she stepped up to take on the roll 4 years ago in the midst of the Centre possibly closing. She has been grateful for her decision. The evening ended with a brave speech from one of the David Busby Centre’s beneficiaries as he told his moving survival story and how he has become the owner of a business today.

It was an event to remember. One that I am sure I will participate in again next year.
