Friday March 6th Freedom 55 hosted the inaugural Hockey Helps The Homeless charity tournament with 10 participating teams. We raised $87,000.00 for two deserving local charities the David Busby Centre and the Redwood. As I am not a hockey player I participated as a team host and took care of our own Freedom 55 team. Our two NHL pros were Dave Reid and Gilbert Dionne. Thank you Dave and Gilbert for sharing your time and stories with us. Our team played well and some stylish goals were score.
At dinner I had the privilege of sitting with Jessica Peddle, executive director of the David busby Centre and she shared how she stepped up to take on the roll 4 years ago in the midst of the Centre possibly closing. She has been grateful for her decision. The evening ended with a brave speech from one of the David Busby Centre’s beneficiaries as he told his moving survival story and how he has become the owner of a business today.
It was an event to remember. One that I am sure I will participate in again next year.
